Worlds of Honor: The Stray - Linda Evans

The first of the stories in the anthology Worlds of Honor, The Stray is written by Linda Evans. It's set in the same year, the same season, in fact as David Weber's story A Beautiful Friendship from the anthology More Than Honor. This one's characters are completely unconnected, save for living on the same planet. The main characters are Dr. Scott MacDallan and the treecat Swift Striker, aka Fisher. Part of the story is told in the present, but a good portion of the story in question is how the two met for the first time.

The Stray is just as well written as A Beautiful Friendship, and it fits very well into the world David Weber has created. In fact, I forgot it wasn't one of Weber's stories until I checked the statistics while writing this review!

Chronologically, it makes a lot of sense to read this story after A Beautiful Friendship, regardless of the fact that the two are unconnected, as are all of the stories in these anthologies.

I loved it, but as I said in my last review, these stories really do assume familiarity with the world David Weber has created for Honor Harrington and the others. If you haven't read the main books and you like military science fiction, you really should give them a try, starting with On Basilisk Station.
