What Would You Recommend? - Charlaine Harris

This is a question I get asked all the time working in the bookstore: "What would you recommend for somebody who loved "_________"? (fill in the blank)" Usually I can come up with something, but that something can be a bit of a wild guess if it's not a book or genre I normally read. This is where you helpful people come in. If you have a suggestion, I'd love to hear it.

This week I'm asking about the novels by Charlaine Harris. Primarily, I'm wondering what you'd recommend for the fans of her Sookie Stackhouse books, which are the basis for the True Blood T.V. series. However, Charlaine Harris has also written a number of mysteries, which I've seen people buying, though not as often her vampire series.

I've neither seen the True Blood series, nor read the books it's based on, so I'm not overly familiar with Charlaine Harris's style of writing. It is on my 'read one day' list, as quite a few people have recommended the books and the t.v. show to me. In the mean time though, I've got to come up with recommendations for people who've liked the books.

I've been recommending the Blood Ties novels by Tanya Huff, which starts with Blood Price, and also the Patricia Briggs Mercy Thompson books (first book Moon Called) for fans of the Sookie Stackhouse series, although I do think the Blood Ties books may be closer in style. I don't know about suggesting the Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter novels by Laurell K. Hamilton. I like them, but there's been such a debate about the most recent books in the series. What would you suggest (and yes, I'm also asking because I like urban fantasy and would always like to have more authors/series to try)?

And, if you've read her other mysteries, what would you suggest for fans of those?

I'd definitely agree with recommending Patrica Briggs and Tanya Huff, because I've read both authors (along with most of the Sookie books) and enjoyed them. I'd also add Jeaniene Frost to the list!

They also may like Kelley Armstrong's books. I've only read the Darkest Powers trilogy but her writing style is rather similar and I quite enjoyed it. That's the only thing I can think of at the top of my head though.

Good to know that I'm at least in the right neighborhood with my suggestions, Natalie. Haven't seen anything from the third author you suggested though, so I'll have to keep her in mind.

Fantasylover12001, that's one I'd forgotten about. And, I've read one of Armstrong's books so I shouldn't have forgotten. Thanks for the suggestion.

Weighing in belatedly…

I'd suggest Diana Rowland for the Southern aspect, and I've heard Nicole Peeler's doing something relatively similar in terms of small-town girl with powers. I'd also suggest the other books by Harris, of course, starting with the "Grave" books because they've also got a supernatural element.

Personally, I've had fairly good luck suggesting Sunshine by Robin McKinley. I hadn't thought of Huff, but then again, we sadly don't carry her. :(

Kim Harrison's Hollows series would be another good one to recommend. Similar writing style, similar amount of humor. Her main character is not down-homey like Sookie is however. I think of Charlaine Harris, Patricia Briggs, and Kim Harrison as the big three of the paranormal genre. I also really like Kelley Armstrong's Darkest Powers trilogy (which is YA), as well as her Women of the Otherworld series (which is not).
I think that early Anita Blake books are a good recommendation, with the caveat that they are more violent and that the series really just turns into bad erotica after about the ninth book. The first eight are really good though.

And, we don't tend to have "Sunshine" in the store I work at, Anassa. Might be available for order though. I'll have to keep it in mind. Haven't heard of Diana Rowland's books. I'll have to see if we have them.

Thanks for the suggestion, Emily. I'd forgotten about Kim Harrison.

Elena, I don't think you specified "books you have". I recommend Sunshine if you find it, though, for personal reading and whatnot.

Diana Rowland's fairly new. Her second book just came out a few weeks ago.

I didn't specify. It would be impossible to do this otherwise. I was just making an observation.

I'll have to look out for the Rowland books though.
