Worlds of Honor: The Hard Way Home - David Weber
The Hard Way Home is story four in the anthology Worlds of Honor, and is another one written by David Weber himself. It's also another one that fills in background for the characters - This time Susan Hibson (who's name I remember, but don't remember her role in the main books).
It's also one of the stories that has Honor Harrington herself in it as well (not to mention Nimitz, the treecat). I remember reading this story once before, and it was one of my favorites then, and I'm really glad to find that I enjoyed it as much this time around as I did that time.
Not only does this story fill in the background of a minor character very nicely, it also gives us a view into another aspect of life in the Star Kingdom of Manticore. We've seen what it's like to grow up on a planet (at least somewhat), but here we find out what the orbital habitats are like to live in, who lives there etc.
All the halmarks of a really good story are here: the characters (both familiar and new), new aspects of the universe on display and, inevitably, a (mostly) happy ending with some comic moments.
