Tuesday Thingers - Sept. 8, 2009

Tuesday Thingers is hosted each Tuesday at Wendi's Book Corner.
This week's questions:

Have you explored the Series feature of your Statistics? Were you surprised by how many series you have/haven't read? Were your series mostly complete, or did you find that you had only read one book from a lot of different series? What was the largest number of books in a series? Feel free to answer a few or all of these questions. :)

My personal listing (counted in my head) runs to between eighteen and twenty series, and it's incomplete. Adding in the ones from the series post takes it to 25. How to count series like the Valdemar books where there are a bunch of trilogies set in the same world? I've just counted them as one series.

I read series a lot (I've got an entry where I list the series I read, just so I can keep track) I've got a question in return for you: How accurate do you think the Series statistic on LibraryThing is? I took a look at it today and I've got to say: Not Very! At least half the series I read are in there multiple times.

The LibraryThing listing for series for me is definitely tending towards incomplete as I'm generally adding fiction only as I read the books (trying to delay the need to actually pay for my account as long as possible), and some of the series listed, I've read all of them (multiple times, in some cases). The non-fiction series tended towards just the one book in the series, while fiction tends to be more complete (whether it's complete on LibraryThing is another question entirely as again, I don't tend to list books I don't own, or have yet to read/re-read and review)

Anyway, according to LibraryThing, I've been reading from 52 series. Now, as I've already noted, the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs is in there at least three times. Same for the Valdemar books by Mercedes Lackey. It's a neat thing to keep track of though.

Tuesday Thingers

Wendi of Wendi's Book Corner runs a weekly meme about LibraryThing called Tuesday Thingers. I'll admit that I'm not a regular poster for this meme, but this week she's asking readers about the Groups feature.

This week's question:
Questions: Have you recently browsed any of the groups? Are you actively participating in any groups? Do you have any favorites?

It's the groups that got me hooked on LibraryThing. I started with the Fantasy Fans group and went from there. I've also discovered some fantastic groups for fans of history. I've only just started getting into the challenge groups though, with the 100 Books Challenge for 2009 group.

It's from the groups that I've discovered a few great books, such as the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik.

Overall, I've found the groups to be fun, friendly and helpful.

Tuesday Thingers

I'm nearly finished Memoirs of A Geisha and taking a break from both the book and preserving fruit with this blog post.

Actually, it started life as a comment over at Wendi's Book Blog and took on a life of its' own. As a result, this is my first Tuesday Thingers post.

This week she's asking about social networking sites.

I guess I'm lukewarm at best on social networking. I use LibraryThing the most, although I have a couple of friends that really prefer GoodReads, and who have convinced me to sign up. Personally, although I have an account there, I don't really use it. As a result, I find LibraryThing to be the easier of the two to use. I love it. The site/groups has doubled my wishlist (usually in terms of history books, but it was LibraryThing that introduced me to the Naomi Novik Temeraire books).

I've never looked into Shelfari at all.

I'm getting into Twitter, but I haven't gotten into MySpace or Facebook, and to be honest, I'm not planning to. Twitter I started with the intention of using it mostly to post updates and links for both All Booked Up, which is this blog, and my J.R.R. Tolkien site: Finduilas's J.R.R. Tolkien Page. However, I've started using it to post more and more little updates about what I'm doing. It's strangely fascinating somehow.

If I had to stick with just one of the networking sites, it would probably be LibraryThing. The groups there have been such a help, including finding book titles for me that I'd completely forgotten.
