This is a question I get asked all the time working in the bookstore: "What would you recommend for somebody who loved "_________"? (fill in the blank)" Usually I can come up with something, but that something can be a bit of a wild guess if it's not a book or genre I normally read. This is where you helpful people come in. If you have a suggestion, I'd love to hear it.
In honor of the season and the fact that I got out in the garden for the first time this year, I'm asking for your recommendations of books on the subject of gardening. Vegetable gardening, flowers, container gardening, whatever. What's your "bible" on the subject?
Considering that I mostly do vegtetable gardening, my favorite for the last few years has been the 2005 edition of Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew. My last review of the book is here. I'm also now looking closely at some other gardening books too.
So, what is your suggestion for a good reference book on the subject?

This is a good question. I wish I had some great answers but I do not. I have a friend who is a master gardener and she comes over and is "the book" for me.
People like that are wonderfully helpful to us newbies. I have a friend like that who I ask for recommendations from too. Eg. the books say 'tomatoes'. Now, what variety of tomatoes is the best? is the kind of question I end up asking. So far I haven't been steered too wrong.
A couple of gardening books I like:
Grow Great Grub by Gayla Trail (reviewed here) and also anything at all by Patrick Lima is wonderful. I own his book Herbs: The Complete Gardener's Guide and it's fantastic.

You probably don't need recommendations for Florida, which I have . . . but I also like the Southern Living Landscape Book. Its design tips could work anywhere.

You're welcome! I'm glad you like it. I don't buy a lot of gardening books (many of them are eye candy with the same sorts of info) but I think this one is both different and excellent.
